Virginia Tech led, 13-7, with 4:04 left in the first half.
Syracuse’s Michael Kostoumele kicked a 44-yard field goal to give the Hokies a 17-7 lead.
The Hokies went on to beat Virginia Tech, 14-10.
The game was the first of three on Saturday night, the second of which was a rematch of last season’s game at the Carrier Dome.
The third game was played at the Colonial Life Arena in Norfolk.
The final score: Virginia Tech 27, Syracuse 23.
The second-year head coach said his team is very motivated to get back in the Carrier Stadium.
He said he was impressed by the response he had received from fans.
I think the atmosphere was incredible.
It was unbelievable.
And I thought that was very, very, important to our success in the game.
He’s excited to see the game in the new stadium, which will be opened to the public in 2019.
Virginia’s Joe Paterno, who led Virginia to a 27-24 win over Duke in the 2012 ACC championship game, and his son Joe P. are now in the process of building a new stadium in Norfolk that will be built with public money.
Joe P.’s son, Joe P., is now a Virginia Tech coach.
The Paternones plan to build a stadium that will serve as a football stadium and also houses a community center.
Joe, who was born and raised in Norfolk, is one of two parents to coach at Virginia Tech.
The other father, Bobby Paterna, is a former Virginia Tech quarterback.
The elder Paterni has led the Hokiness to two bowl games in his career.
The oldest of the Paternos is a fourth-year assistant.
He is also the man who was in charge of the Hokie team that defeated Duke in last year’s ACC title game.
This time, the Hokiest will host a home game against Clemson in 2021.
The Carrier Dome has a capacity of 18,000 for football and 10,000 fans for men’s basketball.
Virginia has had a strong history in football at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Virginia Commonwealth’s football team won the ACC regular season title in 1988, the first time in the program’s history.
The Cavaliers also defeated Florida State and Virginia Tech in the 2001 Orange Bowl.
The team was the only team to reach the national championship game in its inaugural season.
Virginia was ranked No. 1 in the AP poll for the first three weeks of the season before losing to No. 8 Auburn in the Sugar Bowl.
